How To Play LittleBigPlanet PSP On A Television
Incase you hadn't already realised, there's now just less than one month until the release of LittleBigPlanet PSP. ![]()
As much as I'm looking forward to LittleBigPlanet PSP, I'm sure there's a few among you who would agree that it would be such a shame to be playing such a great game on such a tiny screen.
Well then this guide is for you, as it will instruct you on the very simple steps it takes to use one of the PSP's surprisingly under-used features... The ability to play your PSP games on your television. ![]()
Don't believe me?
You can find some basic instructions on how to do this within your PSP's instruction manual.
However this guide will go into a little more depth for everyone.
Requirements
Before we begin though, you will require the following three items...
1. A HDTV, capable of Progressive Scanning and Component Video.
Most HDTVs use Progressive Scan as standard, so chances are that your HDTV is already capable of displaying the required output for your PSP. So quite conveniently, if you've already been enjoying LittleBigPlanet on a nice, shiny HDTV. Then chances are that you'll be able to enjoy LittleBigPlanet PSP on that very same HDTV.
2. Either a PSP 2000/3000 series or a PSPgo.
Unfortunately if you own one of the earliest PSP 1000 models, you will not be able to take advantage of the PSP's TV Output features.
Unsure which model of PSP that you have?
Then simply check the barcode at the base of your PSP, it will display some random digits ending with "PSPXXXX". XXXX being the model of the PSP.
Therefore quite simply if the number displayed at the end is higher than "PSP2000", it will be compatible with outputting video to a tv.
3. A Component AV Cable
I can't stress enough that you require a Component AV Cable for video output of a video game.
Other AV cables will allow you to output your PSP's XMB, UMD movies and pretty much everything else with the exception of video games. Therefore if you want to output the video for video games, including LittleBigPlanet PSP, you will require a Component AV Cable.
A Component Cable should have 5-6 connectors.
As described in more detail below, 3 of them will be for outputting the PSP's video whilst 2 of them will be for outputting the PSP's stereo sound.
If you have an extra connector, don't worry about it, it won't be necessary for what we're trying to achieve here.
If you're having trouble finding one of these.
Simply enter "PSP Component Cable" into the search engine of any good online retailer and you should get plenty of results of appropriate component cables for use with a PSP.
Outputting Video to a TV
Now that we've got the three required items, we're now ready to connect our PSP to our HDTV and it couldn't be simpler. ![]()
Whilst you have your PSP connected to your HDTV, you must make sure that the PSP still has adequate power. Therefore ensure that you have your PSP plugged into a power source or has a full enough battery to last for the gaming session that you have in mind.
Last thing you would want is to be creating a level in LittleBigPlanet PSP, only to have the PSP shut down on you due to lack of power.
1. Connect the Component AV Cable to your PSP.
Should be simple enough, just connect the illustrated connection to the base of your PSP.
![]()
You should find the appropriate output connection relatively close to the barcode that we looked at earlier.
2. Connect the Component AV Cable to your HDTV.
Now working from the other end of Component AV Cable, connect it to your HDTV.
The connections are relatively simple, just connect the colours appropriately.
Red with Red, Blue with Blue, etc...
![]()
![]()
You may notice that you have two Red connections, one is for video output and one is for sound output. If you're unsure which is which, the Red sound output will normally be attached very closely to its sister White sound output.
If your Component AV Cable has a switch on it, allowing you to choose between Component and Composite output.
Ensure that it is set to Component.
3. Turn on your PSP.
4. On your PSP's XMB, go to the Settings menu and scroll down and select "Connected Display Settings".
5. Scroll down and select "Component / D-Terminal Output", make sure that this setting is set to "Progressive".
6. Still on the Connected Display Settings menu, select and click on "Switch Video Output".
7. Confirm by clicking on "Yes".
8. Turn on your HDTV and make sure you're viewing the correct source, it should be labelled something such as "YPbPr", however the source can be labelled differently by different manufacturers, so you may have to search around for the correct source.
However at this point, once you've found the correct source, you should see your PSP's XMB displaying on your HDTV. ![]()
If the video isn't displaying correctly at this point, the first thing I would check is that you didn't mix up the Red Video Output and the Red Audio Output, therefore I would switch those two round first to check that's not the problem.
Your HDTV is now ready to display LittleBigPlanet PSP or any other PSP video game of your choosing.
All that remains is to select your game from the XMB and begin playing! ![]()
From now on, whenever you want to play a PSP game on your HDTV, all you have to do is turn on the PSP and select "Switch Video Output" as described above.
You can also use the Display button on your PSP, which is the button with the Rectangle shape on it, simply hold the button down until the display changes from your PSP to your television.
It should be noted that PSP games won't display full-screen on your HDTV.
Quite simply this is a pre-determined setting by Sony, which has been implemented to ensure that you get the maximum performance out of your PSP whilst it is connected to a television.
However depending on the size of your television, you should find that the video output is still several times the size of your PSP's screen. ![]()
It is possible to bypass this pre-determined setting by installing 3rd party software and firmware.
However since these aren't endorsed or supported by Sony, I won't be detailing them here since they could very well have undesired and negative effects on your PSP.
Anyway that's everything you need to know about setting up your PSP to display video game output onto a HDTV.
Now you should be able to quite clearly see your PSP video games on your HDTV and be able to set up your PSP for any future gaming sessions that you wish to view on your HDTV.
Hopefully this will make LittleBigPlanet PSP that little bit more enjoyable for everyone. ![]()
Not that you wouldn't have enjoyed it on just the PSP's screen though... ![]()

If I am wrong about your post, and you already mentioned that these cables are available and I just missed is since I was skimming, please let me know and I just delete this silly message
Are you able to use the Composite Cable to play video games though?
The research I've done and as I mentioned above in the guide, generally seems to state that whilst a Composite Cable will allow UMD Movie output, you would need a Compononent Cable for Video Game output.
Ideally I would have liked to have tested this out for myself on as many varieties of television as possible.
However my house only contains so many televisions. ![]()
Similarly I'm from England, so a HDTV is generally needed at the very least simply because an NTSC output is required for the PSP's output and therefore a HDTV is require for that NTSC ouput.
Otherwise generally the standard format on British SDTVs is PAL, which isn't compatible with the PSP.
Although again there's so many varieties of television produced by a huge number of different manufacturers, that it would be near impossible to list every single possible case.
Which is why I've included as many pictures as possible.
Just makes it easier to let people see what they're going to require, rather than trying to describe all the possibilities to them. ![]()

I've done this before with GTA: Vice City Stories! (It didn't look good!)
The display seems to be of a pretty good quality to me.
Obviously I've not seen LittleBigPlanet PSP itself displaying on my television yet.
However I've played a variety of games on my television including Sonic Rivals, Final Fantasy Dissidia, Crisis Core and even Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
There certainly didn't seem to be a noticeable drop in the quality of the picture to me.
However the overall quality of the television being used could be a factor in the resulting video output.
It's also worth remembering that the graphics of the GTA Stories series are toned down in comparison to say GTA: San Andreas, so that's also worth bearing in mind if you're comparing the two.

No, that's not my PSP.
My PSP is a 3000 series in the more traditional black colour. ![]()

I really don't understand why they changed the connector on the go, 'cause now I have to chose between power or tv output :/
Edit: ah wait, I can, I just have to spend more money D:
