MGSPackReview.png MGS Pack Review picture by chimpskylark

The Metal Gear Solid level pack was, and remains until this day, the most content heavy DLC pack for littlebigplanet. But with this comes a fairly hefty price tag, costing £4.79/€5.99 in Europe and $5.99 in the US.

As the name would suggest it’s a pack orientated around levels, in this case meaning that it not only gives you a bunch of new objects and materials to build level with, but 6 excusive new levels to boot, greatly demonstrating the new paintinator power-up.

The levels are a great expansion on the main story mode, with a little platforming, and a lot of shooting.  They have a standalone metal gear solid-esque story line, with a littlebigplanet twist, and the collaboration between konami and media molecule is clear. While you don’t have to be familiar with mgs at all, it’s nice if you have, especially seeing the littlebigplanet versions of familiar faces like Otacon. Most of the packs’ stickers are based on imagery from mgs games, and whilst those like the yellow and black tape sticker can be put to good use in many levels, about 10 of them are just screenshots of a gekko from different angles, with a white border around the outside, an especially odd decision considering we’re also given gekko skin and armour materials.

It’s a shame that the costume pack wasn’t built in, as it would have been nice to experience the pack through a shiny new solid snake sackboy, but you do get the fitting ‘Gurlokovich soldier’ costume, who’s’ skin I used to make my own solid snake costume, along with grey moustache and a blue stickered headband gained by acing one of ‘The Island’ levels.

The materials are a useful part of the pack, though most of them will look best in Arabic or Egyptian themed levels, or James Bond style evil lairs, and I’ve found them superior to those of the monster pack, for example, which mostly offers new materials to the already crowded sponge category. The VR materials are a great addition too, but I haven’t really seen them put to great use outside the VR training missions of the pack.

Elsewhere the pack continues to burst at the seams with content, with in total 12 new materials, 72 stickers, a bunch of unique decorations and much, much more.

Music and sounds are yet another feature which to date far exceed any other pack, with four new tracks; one of which, the main metal gear solid theme, is interactive. The sound effects are decent too, with the classic ‘spotted’ alert sound among gekko calls, metal gear rex screams and various jingles from the online bit of metal gear solid four.

At this point, however, this pack continues to delight where so far the other level kits have fallen short, functionality. The paintinator is a great new gadget, and in my opinion the biggest innovation since, well , the games launch, especially in the field of gadgetry, probably adding the most extra depth of any DLC object. The pack comes with a new switch too, activated when the object it’s stuck on is hit by a paintball. It’s also the only pack to come with a new hazard; the plasma ball; which is a weightless ball of energy, primarily emitted at speed by enemies with big guns. There’s a ‘searchlight’ object in there too, but it has become fairly useless since the creators pack 1, which allowed the player to limit the angles of sensor switches.

The pack also offers 12 trophies, but you don’t need them to get the platinum, though it’s nice to have a few new achievements to aim it.

Final note: I’d recommend the pack to any fan of the game, with a broad range of creation assets and six new levels to play, compared to the single gallery levels found in the monster and history packs, it’s a pack for all to enjoy.; so unless you can hold on to the hope of levels in a future pack, it’s a must buy.

My score: 9.5/10 (Remember: If you have the game of the year version, you already have this pack!)

Re: The Ultimate DLC Advice thread

I think the Complete DLC List by Tanrockstan34 should probably be linked in the OP. It has all the DLC listed with pricing except the Watchmen DLC (at the moment):

http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&message.id=74693&query.id=24169

I'd also link to Mm's Flickr gallery on the OP, just so people can get better images of what the costumes, stickers, and materials look like in each DLC pack:

A special notice should be made that purchasing the complete Team ICO Costume Pack gives you 16 new sound effects, just because this is the kind of thing that new players (and many of the old ones) probably wouldn't know.
