Thanks cubs. I get what you mean about the general negatives, because I too felt like there was a lack of polish. And the story was the last thing I did, so that makes sense. The contest deadline was really killing me in this one, so I understand why you didn't think it was that great. Expect a rereview later on after I make all these changes!

Re: ★ ★ The LittleBIGReview Group [Everything in One!] TEMPORARILY CLOSED ★ ★

Platforming Aptitude Test

AUTHOR: aWold

DIFFICULTY: [Hard] to [Extreme]

CATEGORY: Puzzler

POSITIVES: This level is clearly styled after Portal, with the gameplay, visuals, and feel.  It's a real brain twister at times.  But it never really gets frustrating.  Making a level difficult without making it frustrating is a pretty difficult thing to do, a hard balance to strike.  The creator has in this level.  I liked the touch of having the room number indicator at every checkpoint.  I very much enjoyed the ninth section, it was challenging and fun, a real brain tester without being frustrating.  I don't understand why the level has only 2 stars; it's almost ridiculous.  It's a very solid 3 as it is and with better visuals and sounds could become a 4 or even a 5.  The amount of plays and stars is shameful, really.

NEGATIVES:

-The section where the player has to fall into red gaps to see if they're electrified or not struck me as unfair, almost the creator cheating.  It just feels unfair, an unwanted game of chance.  Perhaps this is personal opinion.  However, here is a logical reason: most people, if a behavior (falling on a red part of the floor) doesn't work, they'll rule out that behavior for future actions.  In plain English, if the player doesn't succeed first try, they'll try other things and forget about falling on the red parts.  They'll rule it out.  I suggest reworking this section.

-There really weren't enough sound effects for me.  While I accept the lack of music because no track in LBP would fit the theme of the level, that absence should have been compensated for with more sounds.  It wasn't.  I suggest adding more sounds, plain and simple.

-I've said this before, time and again, and frankly I'm getting sick of saying it. :smileytongue:  Good visuals are a MUST, unless the gameplay or some other feature is absolutely mind-blowing.  While the gameplay in here was very good, the visuals weren't.  I understand the simplistic style of Portal and the levels based on it, but this was too simplistic, really.  I suggest putting a lot more time, thought, and effort into the visuals.

NITPICKS:

-At the black elevator that brings the player down to the "real" start of the level, I kept holding it the elevator and it went back up before I finished reading everything.  While this may seem like player error--and it partially is--I still suggest making the elevator a one-shot down to the bottom.  After all, there is nothing in the upper level that the player would have to go back for.

-I would simply suggest having the checkpoint circle that spins when the player is present to be hooked up to a permanent switch.  It's not for any logical reason, really; I just think it'd look more professional.

SUGGESTIONS:

-Look into, consider, or implement the negatives and nitpicks.

NOTES: None

OVERALL RATING: 3/5 stars; [hearted]; [author-hearted]

Thanks for the review. Hopefully I can get a few more plays now. The chamber with the dummies and red buttons is not left to chance, but since you didn't get it I do need to think about how to make it clearer. The chamber is called 'sequence,' so the player is supposed to analyze the positions of the dummies and from that figure out which button is correct. As far as the visuals, minimalism is a very deliberate choice and I do put a great deal of thought into the designs. I get so many ideas of stuff I could add, but plain and simple, I choose not to. Lastly, I do agree that more sound could be added; I guess at the time I just couldn't really figure out the best way to go about it, but I will look into it later. Thanks again...

Re: ★ ★ The LittleBIGReview Group [Everything in One!] TEMPORARILY CLOSED ★ ★

I know you probably haven't heard from me in months. I'm sorry I gone for so long, I've had my midterm Finals, I studied crazily and I've had a lot of school related functions that required my participation. Give me a heads as to what I should review, or if I'm still in the group.

Not Another Crane Game!: By DarkDedede

Difficulty: Easy but infuriating

Category: Minigame

Pros:

I'm one of few people who could say that I enjoy a good crane machine. The only part of this level that entices me to even play are the unique looking prizes. That's the only component of good crane machine that this level is able to display.

Cons:

This level looks very ugly. Visible dark matter and screenshots of yourself are a no no. Also, the visuals are lacking and clashing in terms of materials used. I would suggest reworking the level with a specific theme. Perhaps Jungle or Temple themes, whatever floats your boat. The second little irk that frustrates me is the crane itself... The thing is too frustrating to use. Even if you have the prize completely clasped, it still manages to move the hooks and escape... It's just visually unappealing and not fun at all. Lastly, I was able to spot a Mm made object. The balance from the garden levels. A good level requires patience, and dedication. Work hard and long to make your level nice.

Suggestions:

The idea is good, it just needs to be executed successfully. Try setting a theme, trying new crane designs and work on the aspect of fun not frustration.

Ratings:

Fun:1/5

Aesthetics: 1/5

Originality: 3/5

Execution: 1/5

Overall:

1/5 Author and level not hearted

Playstation HOME: By SgtJARHEADxX

Difficulty: Simple

Category: Other

Pros: I don't really have any for this level.

Cons: It's made unclear, exactly what your supposed to do in this level. I wouldn't even consider in a level. It doesn't meet any of my personal criteria. It's missing purpose, aesthetics, originality, and it isn't exactly fun. The only purpose of this level it seems, is to walk into a poorly made building, collect the authors level keys, and chose which objects you wish to see at the end.

Suggestions: This isn't really even a level. I don't want to review a level on what it doesn't have, but I have to. I would suggest looking at well made community levels and decide on what is popular and fun to play in the community.
